Markets
Mercado 28
mehr-CA-do VEN-teh oh-cho
Behind Post Office. Decent to absolutely fabulous.
For the adventurous, a real Mexican marketplace
Don't expect cute little stalls. This is all cement Cancun-típico
with strong smells ranging from delightful to pretty rank on certain
hot muggy days. Excellent fresh fruits and produce, good chickens,
butchers, clothing, shoes, novelties, eating spots -- you name it.
See individual categories for recommendations. The presentation
is not for the anorectic, but the quality of the produce and the
prices make this a very important place to shop
El Parian/Crucero Area
Av. Tulum/Mérida Highway Crossing. It just doesn't get any
cheaper than this on most items.
The real Mexico to the max
The fun begins out here where Av. Tulum gives up the cutesy Cancun
flavor and gets down-home. Explore. That's what we do. Prices sometimes
are a bit higher than you might expect, but mostly it's all bargain
land.
The atmosphere is absolutely lacking in any form of esthetic grace,
but the warmth and friendliness and sense of vibrant life are worth
anything. This is where country-folk come in to sell their wares.
Mercado 23
mehr-CA-do VEN-teh TREHS
Off Av. Tulum, several blocks past 2nd traffic circle. Decent to
just too fabulous to believe.
About as real as it gets in real Mexican shopping
For the strong of heart only, this sprawling jumble of cement stalls
is Mercado 28 to the next power. Smells can be overpowering, the
cleanliness not quite up to American hospital standards, not even
trying really. Good selection of fruits and vegetables, best locksmith
and leather and shoe repair. Great hardware store. Although this
market can be a little heavy even for us, you will always find the
best selection of meats and produce here.
