Fresh fish is surprisingly hard to find in Cancun. You will have to be quite observant to select the fresh catch from the old. Many varieties of good frozen shrimp are available. Check frozen shrimp carefully for signs of age -- black stains along tails. When eating in restaurants, always ask for the catch of the day. Most fish served in the Hotel Zone is frozen.

A full-service fish market that sells to hotels and restaurants as well as the general public, this is where we usually buy our fish and shrimp. It smells clean and looks clean and the fish is always as fresh as it can be in Cancun proper, usually no more than 24 hours from the sea.
